The Cure

Greatest Hits
B+

A new Greatest Hits disc from the Cure is rarely cause for celebration. Unlike some artists who rarely release compilations of their best work, the Cure has previously released two greatest hits compilations, two live albums, and a remix disc.

While the Greatest Hits does a terrific job of picking from the group's best songs, it becomes a must have because of the set's second disc, which is a repeat of the first disc's 18 songs. The difference between the two discs is that disc two contains acoustic performances of the 18 tracks.

Cure frontman Robert Smith has always been a remarkable studio performer and his songwriting skills are matched by few. On the second disc, Smith shows why this reputation is well-earned. He seems to be having fun on every song. The acoustic numbers have a vitality, a freshness that infects the tracks.

The set contains two new songs. "Just Say Yes" is rather forgettable, however "Cut Here," deserves its place on this collection because, had it appeared on any other Cure studio release, it would certainly have been included in this collection. It mixes a modern sound with classic lyrics of regret for love lost and is an example of Smith at his absolute best, and the rendition on the acoustic disc is breathtaking.

There are some questionable tracks both included and excluded on the set and many Cure fans will wonder why a song like "Wrong Number" made the cut when classics like "Pictures of You" or "Fascination Street" (which most will argue are far better tracks), did not. While those exclusions are the only major complaints one can have with the collection, it is a significant point of contention.

Those who purchase this disc should ensure that they pick up the two-disc set. (It is supposedly a limited edition.)
