Let me begin by apologizing to Howie Doyle who mailed his CD to me months ago. Being that I was in the process of finishing law school, and now attempting to pass the West Virginia Bar Exam, my CD review page got pushed back a little....well it got pushed back a lot. Now that I've said that..lets review. When I first heard Subterra's "Speed Of Pain," the first thing that came to my mind was Bob Dylan. Being that I'm not a big Dylan fan, the CD didn't quite sit well with me at first. However, after a little while it grew on me. That happens to me with music styles I'm not used to listening to. While it's not in the top of my CD rotation, I've taken a shine to it.

I will note that the recording on the CD isn't the best around. However, it has a raw sound to it that works well for a first CD. Just to clarify what I mean, I'll use the vocals for an example. They don't seem to blend well with the music, its almost like the music lowers when the vocals kick, giving it a kind of live sound. However, I realize, as should you, when your dealing with a new band who has to produce their own CD, your going to have that. I mean these guys aren't playing in an RCA recording studio. So, I give full props to Howie and the boys for putting it together.

What are the CD's highlights? I took a shining to the third track on the CD, "More Than There Is." The song seems to deal with a person who is feeling kind of in dire straights, but is looking for a reason to hang on. Something I can relate to with this exam hanging over my head. The lyrics are presented well and show meaning...its a cool song. "Just Want To Let You Know," the fourth track, could be mistaken for Dylan himself. The song has a very relaxed 70's kind of feel to it. This is without a doubt a timeless song influenced from the Woodstock era.

Overall, I have to say that "The Speed Of Pain" is worth a shot. Don't expect LIVE or Bob Dylan. This is a band who is still learning to harness their energy. Its there and is waiting to be let lose. I've never had the chance to see this band live, but judging from the CD, I'm willing to bet that they put on a good show. I'd guarantee a lot of energy. This CD is more of a kick back with the boys and drink some brew or smoke you mind a little. Give em' a shot folks...I think you'll be pleased.
