By now, most people have heard the throw back sound of Smash Mouth's new
song "Walkin' On The Sun" on the radio, they've heard it on TV commercials
for the movie Wag The Dog. The song appears on the bands first album titled
"Fush Yu Mang." When I first heard "Walkin' On The Sun," I ran right out
and bought the CD thinking it would be a collection of similar Pulp Fiction
sounding songs. I was wrong. The good news is, the other songs weren't
bad. The sound of the band follows along the same lines as the Bosstones mixed
with Goldfinger (ska/punk). The band, in past interviews, profess they
are not a ska band in any way shape or form. The CD has 11 original songs
and a fresh remake of War's "Why Can't We Be Friends (longest song on the
CD)." Some of the gems of the CD, other than "Walking On The Sun," are
"Heave-Ho," a song about being evicted, "Padrino," a song making fun of
wise guys. In the end, I can say wasn't upset that I bought the CD, but it wasn't
my best buy of the year. The 12 songs are a little too short, running little
over a half-hour. The saving grace of the album is that the songs have
some meat to them. It is the type of music you could put on at a large
party or while driving and it would make a good upbeat background thing.
It doesn't seem to make a good CD to listen to while doing homework or
talking with friends. All this depends, however, on your personal taste
for ska music.
