On her third album, Miss E... So Addictive, Missy Elliott shows just how far she has come in the four years since her debut, Supa Dupa Fly. While that album proved that Elliott was more than capable of holding her own in the male-dominated hip-hop world, it also felt like a first album, in that it seemed like she felt like she had to prove that she had street cred when in fact, her music proved that she already did.
Part of that could be traced to the fact that Elliott has fought throughout her professional life to break that every female hip-hop artist has to be a size-0 in order to succeed. Her stardom lies in the fact that she is genuinely talented. She is a terrific singer, a renowned songwriter, and an intelligent business woman. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that her third album is a commercial success. And it should also come as no surprise that quality songs are what makes this album eminently entertaining. Using the formula that she honed early in her career, Elliott has enlisted the likes of Redman, Method Man, Ludacris, Ginuwine, Eve, Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, and Jay-Z, to support her throughout. Make no mistake; her featured guests are mostly supporting actors in this play. She's the one in control on "One Minute Man," when she sings about her desire to find a guy who can keep that groove thang going for more than 60 seconds. The laid-back beats don't masquerade the message. They just enhance it. Of course, Missy is confident enough to let someone else duet with her, as Timbaland does on up-tempo "Whatcha Gon' Do." "Old School Joint" is just that, a lyrical trip back to the 1980s. This backing track could have been ripped from any of a hundred 80's dance hits. Yet, instead of sounding dated, it is inspired and begs one to jump on the dance floor. And the first single, "Get Ur Freak On," will keep you on the floor, with its catchy chorus. Missy Elliott could not have chosen a better title for her third album. It is quite entertaining and quite addictive and will keep her fans grooving all through the summer. |
