Where does this CD fit into what I like in music? Let's see, I'd put it
up there with it being better than getting a crazy suck job from a porn
star while eating caviar out of the belly button of Heidi Klum. Well maybe
not that far, but no mincing words, this is the best CD that I've ever
owned. There isn't a track on here that I don't like. What do you
compare it to? A touch of Korn and outright originality! Funk and rock
in its own style. Not to mention that Brandon Boyd has one of the best
voices I've heard in ages. This is the bands third album, the follow up
to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997), (the follow up to Enjoy Incubus (1997)), which is very
different from this release. What I like about this album is that all the
songs deal with how to be your own person and living your own life. Let
me give you some examples. "Privilege," track 1, deals with people not doing their own thing and waiting around for things to happen versus making it happen yourself. It's hard to confuse lines like, "Isn't it strange that a gift could be an enemy. Isn't it weird that a privilege could feel like a chore. Maybe it's me but this line isn't going anywhere. Maybe if we looked hard enough we could find a back door. The day you were born you were born free. That is your privilege." It's a very powerful song. Track 4, "The Warmth" deals with how the world has the ability to jade a person if they don't remain true to themselves. "Don't let the world bring you down. Not everyone here is that fucked up and cold. Remember why you came and while you're alive experience the world before you grow cold." "Stellar," track 6, now getting airplay all over the nation, is a love song about how a girl makes him feel and effects his life. Brandon Boyd discusses this song in the September issue of Rolling Stone. And track 12, "Pardon Me", also getting a lot of airplay, the best song on the CD in my opinion. "Pardon me while I burst into flame. I had enough of the world and its people's mindless games. Pardon me while I burn and rise above the flames." Few can deny that at times in their life they simply want to explode due to all the seemingly senseless shit that goes on around them. If so, this is your anthem. Don't let the name fool you. A name like Incubus brings to mind Slipknot like players throwing poop off the stage into the crowd. This is not the case. If you don't have this CD yet, you really need to go and get it! Its been in my CD player for a month and I've not taken it out. The lyrics are fresh and new. The sound is unique and new. And I've got a new favorite album (taking the place of Third Eye Blind's first album). |
