Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
B

On the third track from their self-titled debut album, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ask "Whatever Happened To My Rock 'N' Roll?" Judging by the songs on this album, BRMC are doing their best to make sure that their rock and roll doesn't go down without a fight. On "Whatever Happened To My Rock 'N' Roll (Punk Song)" the band, whose name is taken from the biker gang in The Wild Ones, combines walls of guitar mayhem with snarling lyrics.

The band unabashedly wears its influences on its sleeve. "Awake," with its sonic layers, sounds remarkably like early Nirvana. "Love Burns" is reminiscent of The Jesus and Mary Chain. "As Sure As the Sun" could have been produced by any number of Britpop bands and the opening drumbeat to "Rifles" might as well be a slowed-down version the Cure's "Fascination Street."

The notable problem with this disc is that it beats up the listener, wearing her down. Constant pounding from similar-sounding songs tends to overwhelm, which is unfortunate considering that the band understands how to write a rock song-something that so many young bands do not.

BRMC is polished and has produced a noteworthy debut album. As soon as this old-sounding dog learns some new tricks, they will be a force to be reckoned with. Until then, appreciate their talents, and champion their desire to keep on playing that rock and roll music.
